Electricians are next says HMRC

HMRC is continuing its tax avoidance campaigns and today launches the Electricians Tax Safe Plan (ETSP). HMRC are giving electricians an opportunity to come forward and declare any unpaid tax. Mike Scott our Tax Manager at HSJ Accountants explains who will be affected.

This new campaign builds on the Plumbers campaign launched last year which so far has generated an additional £1.98million, with more expected once the final disclosures are made.
Unsurprisingly HMRC are using similar tactics for this campaign. The HMRC website defines an electrician or electrical fitter quite widely as ‘anyone who installs, maintains and tests electrical systems, equipment and appliances under stringent safety regulations.’

We don’t know what information HMRC holds on electricians or what the penalties may be, that detail still hasn’t been provided. For the Plumbers tax safe plan HMRC were able to get information from Corgi and Gas Safe in order to identify potential unpaid tax liability.

If you are concerned that you may fall into HMRC’s definition of an electrician or electrical fitter, then please email us at help@hsj.uk.com and we will email you as soon as we have more details from HMRC.
